Glue the side pieces to the dice box first. I used these notches to give myself more wood to glue the holder and tray together. The 1/4вЂі width is the same width as the dice tray pieces. If you did the same as me, cut your dice holder so that your dice tray fits into the notches.

You can see how 3 of the 4 5вЂі pieces will connect to make the box. The other needs to be cut slightly shorter, and is glued inside the end. The other two make the end of the dice tray. In my case, I cut 4 pieces 5вЂі long and 1/4вЂі wide. You could probably do this by hand but itвЂ™s very quick on a table saw. The dice tray is just three pieces of the 1вЂі board cut to size. Otherwise you may find (as I did) that some holes are going to cut through the edge of the block. Then, from those lines, arrange your dice holes. Mark off at least a 1/4вЂі around the top of your block. And I was lucky I did because I neglected to measure off a margin. Tip: the first time I attempted the box, I used a piece of test softwood. I used the thinner board as both the top and base of the box. To make this project easier for someone of my skill ability, I drilled all the way through the wood. ThatвЂ™s plenty of space to hold a set of 6 dice, the standard D&D set (newb error: 7 is the standard set: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20, d100(%)). The holder is a solid piece of wood with a bunch of holes drilled through it. 4 x Wood screws the same width as the magnets.You could recreate this with weights pressed against the wood or with strong rubber bands. I used 1 large clamp to hold wood together as glue dried. One really narrow (guide holes), one the width of your magnets, one 1вЂі spade bit This was only to make the notches that connect the dice tray and the dice holder. Used to make the main dice holes and to create holes for the corner magnets and screws. You could probably do this with a hand saw but itвЂ™d be a bit slower. One piece thatвЂ™s long and about 1/4вЂі tall and one thatвЂ™s about 1вЂі tall. In the drawings below, I am using the actual height, but itвЂ™s the 1вЂі board. Originally, I thought I was going to need a double layer of wood but in fact this was the perfect height for the dice sets I have. ItвЂ™s actually smaller than that, about 3/4вЂі high. That much wood is enough to do this project twice, and still some to spare.ДЄ note on wood, if youвЂ™re new to it. I believe they were 3 feet long but get as short as you can. To make the box in the photo at the top of this page, I bought 1 piece of 1/4вЂі x 5вЂі oak and one piece of 1вЂі x 5вЂі oak. I went with some hardwood to make sure it was a bit more durable. I have a decent set of tools as well, but nothing that a typical house owner wouldnвЂ™t have. But the boxes arenвЂ™t terribly complicated and they are a nice keepsake. I think the impact Critical Role has had on D&D accessories canвЂ™t be understated.

There are plenty of really nice dice boxes you can purchase. I decided I would turn my hand to making a dice box as a present. But IвЂ™ve been fascinated with the paraphernalia they use: dice bags, rolling boxes, etc. Delayed both in that I started following Campaign 2 and that I never watch it live (past my bedtime). The title dicebox is a reference to the peorth rune, which in divination systems may represent 'dice cup' or 'womb', symbolizing 'something revealed that had been hidden, though it can also stand for a gamepiece or a pawn'.I am a delayed follower of Critical Role, a live Dungeons and Dragons production. Dicebox is also on comic scholar Scott McCloud's top 20 webcomics list, and was used along with Penny Arcade, Fetus-X and Questionable Content as an example of comics using the web to create 'an explosion of diverse genres and styles' in McCloud's 2006 book Making Comics.

The Oregonian calls Dicebox the 'gravitational center' of Oregon's 'vibrant Web-comic scene'. Manley Lee's work on Dicebox made her a finalist for the Friends of Lulu's Kimberly Yale Award for Best New Talent for 2003. The comic, planned for four books totalling 36 chapters, is set in the space-travelling future and is primarily the story of one year in the lives of two women factory workers, Griffen Medea Stoyka and Molly Robbins. Molly and Griffen, protagonists of Dicebox by Jenn Manley LeeДicebox, by American cartoonist Jenn Manley Lee, is a science fiction webcomic which has been hosted at the subscription-based comics anthology site Girlamatic.
